Turning 65 is an important milestone—and it is also the time to start preparing for Medicare.

When Can You Enroll in Medicare?

Your Medicare Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months:

• Three months before the month you turn 65
• The month you turn 65
• Three months after the month you turn 65

Enrolling during the three months before your birthday month can help ensure that your Medicare coverage begins on time. According to Medicare, if you enroll before the month you turn 65, your coverage generally begins the month you turn 65.

If you wait until your birthday month or one of the following three months, your coverage generally begins the next month.
